Vows Of Silence

09 October 2002

This morning I woke up with Action Reaction stuck in my head for no apparent reason. I went around singing, "No will, no way/ No work, no pay" under my breath all morning.

My roommate has decided that since her brother told her she talks too much she would go the entire day without talking, just to prove that she could. She communicated by means of charades and writing stuff down. We both have the same first class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so I was able to explain to her first teacher why she wasn't speaking. She has that teacher again for her second class, but for her third class she not only has a different teacher but she also doesn't have the class with any of the people in her first two classes.

Anyway, because she's not speaking today the in-depth pre-history discussion was replaced by me explaining to everyone in the class why she wasn't speaking. The teacher thought it was funny and humored her by not asking her any questions. Not that he usually asks questions anyway. We found out in history today that we won't be having that class at all next week. Monday's the holiday (I still don't understand why we get Columbus Day off but we have classes on Civil Rights Day), and Wednesday and Friday the teacher's just not going to be around. We decided on having our midterm the Wednesday after next week, at which the point the essay, which he'll be assigning tomorrow, will also be due.

I was just listening to Billy Joel's I've Loved These Days and was thinking that, apart from the cocaine reference, it would make a great graduation song. Of course, the cocaine reference is right at the climax of the song and probably wouldn't go over well with... anybody. But it's really a good song. Maybe if I can think of something else that we can "soothe our souls" with that rhymes with champagne...

I went to the ATM the other day to get some money out and the receipt that came out after the cash said I have a whole crapload of money in there that I wasn't aware of (now realize, before you rush to the bank and try to hack into my account and steal all my craploads of money, a "crapload" of money to a college student who isn't even getting a regular paycheck yet is a relatively small amount to anyone else. You'll recall I got very excited at finding $30 earlier this year). I'm not sure where it all came from, or even if it really is all in there. I'll hafta check my bank statement when I get it. Maybe I have a secret admirer who has nothing better to do with his money than put it in my account.

All we did in ethics today was go to the library and learn how to look stuff up on the computers. The purpose was to help us research our upcoming project, which will count as our midterm. Once we were shown how to use the computer system, we were free to leave. So I got out of ethics pretty early and keep thinking it should be later than it actually is.

I keep thinking I should have more to write about, too, but that's not happening either.

My roommate has successfully gone through the day without speaking. My only fear is that tomorrow all the surpressed urges to speak from today will come forth and she'll be talking non-stop, which won't help her case in the least, and will probably actually only make it worse.

And since that pretty much brings you up to date, I will leave you after one more thing: I just put up an "about" page that contains a short bio and disclaimer, so when you're bored you can go read that.
